Farmer Time

IMG_1421.jpeg

Once upon a time in America, most of us used to be farmers. Even those who weren't farmers depended on their land for food and water; outhouses, wood-chopping, and laundry lines.

In 1840 farmers made up 70% of the US workforce. In 1935 there were 7 million farms in the Uniter States. Today there are less to 2 million, and dropping fast. There are 50,000 jobs in agriculture available every year, that go predominately unfilled because a lack of qualified candidates. But most of those jobs are not in fields. They're in labs and offices.

Where there is climate control. And lights. We have lights. Electricty: In the common American Household since 1939.

I woke up this morning while it was still dark, thinking I had another hour or so. I felt refreshed. Maybe I'll get up?

It's 7:00 AM. I overslept. The sun isn't even up yet.

I had forgotten about the annual tribute America pays to the farming community of the 1840s every Spring.

We really don't need this anymore, do we?
