Motivation and a Warning

According to Sol Orwell, there are four primary motivations behind human decision-making.

  1. Money
Many people are motivated by money and the security it brings. This isn't an evil thing and can be used for great good.

  2. Fame.
Like money, some use personal renown for good, and others live in a narcissistic stupor. Either way, this motivates some people.

  3. Influence.
This is different than fame, in that these people genuinely don't care if you know their name (unlike "influencers" on Instagram), They want you to

  4. Freedom.
These are people who do what they do, to do what they want. This is where I sit. Sure, I need and want money. But I only want enough to have the freedom to do the kind of work that I believe to be most important.

While these are good categories of motivation in the entrepreneurial and business space, I would add a fifth motivation in the leadership space.

And it's one where I don't see an upside.

Beware of anyone who is motivated by power.

They tend to be the most dangerous of people.
