On Closed Doors

Everybody experiences them.
What was yours?

A university you were sure to get into, but didn’t.
A job opportunity you were made for, but got turned down.
A chance to travel that you didn’t have the money for.
A career that you left. Or were forced to leave for reasons beyond your control.
Or, worse, for reasons within your control.

There are two things you can do when you face a door that’s been closed, shut and locked.

You can face the door, pounding away, hoping against hope that someone will hear you again. Eventually. Bloody knuckled and sturdy souled people should make for great employees, or students, or travelers of the world. Shouldn’t they?

Worse, you face the door and lament. Why did this have to happen to me? This was the opportunity of my life. It’s gone. I’ve missed it. What’s the point of anything else? What I wanted most was behind that door, so I will sit on this stoop and weep salty tears for the rest of my miserable days on this miserable planet.

Or you can turn around.
And realize that you’re standing outside.

And that this closed door just opened up the rest of the world.

So, turn around.

The world is waiting.
