Own Your Typos
They’re here.
And I hate them.
Even though I have a system to check for them, my eyes still miss them. 51-year old eyes aren’t what they used to be, I guess.
Sometimes they’re in the worst sorts of places. I emailed a local editor I’d like to have coffee with yesterday. The email came back. I apparently have the wrong address. I tried to reach her through LinkedIn messaging service. And while there weren’t any typos in the email, there were in the message.
Editors don’t like those kinds of things. I may very well never hear from her.
And I hate that. But I should have been as careful with the message as I was with the email.
Then I read this on Seth’s Blog this morning:
[Typo update: There are typos on this blog now and then, and I apologize for all of them, the past ones and the ones yet to come. I usually fix them within an hour of publication … just click on the title of the post and you’ll see the latest version, here, on the blog itself, almost certainly corrected. Thanks for your forbearance and patience.]
Own your typos. Then fix them when you can.
This feels like good counsel for a lot of things.
(One of my best friends lets me know every time I miss a typo. He’s not being a jerk-face. He’s being a friend. And I appreciate it.)
