18,933 out of 27,375
The Daily Office.
It has nothing to do with where I work. I can essentially work from anywhere in the world.
The Daily Office is a spiritual practice that involves praying written prayers at certain times of the day. For me, that’s morning, midday, and evening (as I finish work for the day). (I use this.)
There’s a line in the midday prayer that always catches my attention. It turns my head, like catching the glimpse of a familiar face out of the corner of my eye.
Teach us, dear Lord, to number our days
That we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
The average person lives 27, 375 days.
Today I begin my 53rd spin around the sun, which means I’ve been around for 18,933 of my allotted days. If I’m average I have 8,442 left. Who knows? I might beat the average and live to be 82. Which means I have a little over 11,000 days left.
Perhaps the prayer doesn’t mean for me to literally “number my days.” Perhaps it does. But perspective is crucial.
We have a limited number of spins around the sun.
Wisdom makes every day count.
Start.
Finish.
Do what you must.
