Marketing Monday: So It Begins
My business needs consistent, intentional, systematic marketing.
Yours does, too.
Marketing is a tainted word, though - most associated with slimy phone tactics, spam, annoyance on social media, and the loss of friends in the inner labyrinth of a pyramid scheme.
A necessary evil. But marketing is not evil unless what you are selling is evil. I assume that you’re not. We’re working to make the world a better place. We’re working to make people’s lives fuller and more satisfying. If that be the case, we need to change mindsets. I need to change my mindset. Seth Godin says that marketing is generosity.
I believe he’s correct.
When you’re stuck in an airplane seat for 13 hours, like I was last week, there’s a lot of time to think. As I consider my own business and the necessary marketing tasks, I came to an important conclusion:
Marketing is more than a task to check off the list. It’s a mindset.
It’s not selfish. It’s selfless.
It’s not about me. It’s about them.
It’s not about knowledge. It’s about love.
Marketing has to be systematic to work, so it’s got to be on the “to-do list”. We have to tell stories that help people because selling is helping.
And tools like email and telephones may be involved. But, with a mindset shift, the slime is gone. There’s less selfishness and more generosity.
I’m now devoting significant time on Mondays to marketing tasks for my consulting business. Tasks that will tell stories of how people are helped by what I do, and how I serve others, as well. It’s a learning process for me. A mindset shift. A deeper understanding of love and service in a context that’s always felt the opposite of that to me.
So, as this blog is generally about things I am learning, Monday’s posts will specifically devoted to my learnings on the subject of marketing. Marketing Monday.
So beginning today “Marketing Mondays” is a new category on the blog.
I hope it serves you.
