Give Them Something They’re Already Talking About

While Christmas shopping at my local independent bookseller (a place where I believe everyone should Christmas shop), I discovered a book by a well-known author. This would not be so unusual. Well-known authors write books and bookshops sell said books. Happens all the time.

The thing about this particular book that caught my attention was the blurb.

Here’re the first two sentences:

Leadership is not about titles, status, and wielding power. A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for recognizing the potential in people and ideas and has the courage to develop that potential.

Good.

Also sounds a lot like the material that I’m 20,000+ words into writing a book about.

My first thought was “Well. This popular author beat me to it.”

But upon further reflection, I see this as a good thing.

  1. There are already people talking about this topic of leadership “without titles, status, and wielding power.”
  2. There is a reason coffee shops and micro-breweries tend to congregate in the space. I wonder if the same could be said for books?
  3. I have the opportunity to innovate material and voice.

I am actually happy and looking forward to having my voice join others who are talking about leadership in this fashion.

It would be much worse if I wanted to write about something that no one is talking about.
