Coffee Shop Saturdays: Old Town Garden Coffee, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
In case you haven’t picked up on this, Renee’ and I are traveling in Southeast Asia this month. We have a new job with a new parent organization. It’s challenging. It’s a steep learning curve.
And it’s a blast.
It’s an opportunity to serve a lot of amazing people around this region.
And an opportunity to work in a lot of Asian coffee shops.
Currently in Phnom Penh, and coffee shops litter every street corner. Nearby Vietnam is the second largest coffee exporter in the world (behind Brazil). The major difference being bean type. Much of the coffee grown in Southeast Asia of the robusta variety, rather than the arabica beans North Americans are used to.
But, it’s surprisingly easy to hunt down a good cup of coffee in Asia. This both makes me happy and makes traveling here even more delightful.
Tucked away next to the little boutique hotel where we’re staying while in Phnom Penh sits Old Town Garden Coffee and Snack, and I am a huge fan.
Let’s start with the staff.
Cambodian culture is kind and endearing. Their hospitality is bar none. Old Town Garden is no exception. The staff is friendly and helpful. They aim to please. But the goodness doesn’t stop there.
The espresso is second to none. Smooth, no bitterness. Chocolate, nutty notes. Renee’ and I have been more than pleased with every drink we’ve ordered (Espresso, Americano, Latte, and Cappuccino), iced and hot.
Renee’ tried one of the smoothie options and was also duly impressed. The lemon-rose smoothie is a refreshing break on a hot Cambodian afternoon. (And, let’s face it. All Cambodian afternoons are hot!)
The environment is very comfortable, with soft seating and tables. They also have great WiFi for getting work done. We’ve spent some good hours getting things done here on this trip.
Old Town Garden Coffee and Snack is located in the heart of downtown Phnom Penh, on Preah Nordstrom near the Independence monument. It’s connected to the Anik Boutique Hotel, which is also quite a decent place to stay while in this busy, bustling, beautiful city.
